The library will no longer send out overdue notices.

Effective Immediately: Due to budgetary constraints, Molstead Library will no longer send out overdue notices. Please check your library items for the due date, and be sure to return the items on time. Overdue fines of .25 per item per day still apply (except for Reserve items which are 1.00 per day).  If items are not returned in a timely matter, a hold will be placed on your account at the registrar's and you will not be able to get transcripts, register for another semester of school, or graduate from NIC until the items are returned and fines are paid.

FOOD FOR FINES

Owe fines on overdue materials checked out of NIC's Molstead Library?  Encountering problems registering for classes because of those library fines?  Short on cash?  If you've answered yes to all three questions you are a perfect candidate for the "Food for Fines" program!  Bring one nonperishable food item to the library's circulation desk and library staff will erase $1.00 from your fines.  Bring five items and $5.00 will be removed from your overdue fines.  There's no limit to the fines you can erase by donating one nonperishable food item for every $1.00 in fines you owe the library.  Food collected through the "Food for Fines" program is donated to a local food bank.  So now's the time to erase those fines and feel great about it.  Questions?  Contact Debra Vigil, Circulation Supervisor, at 769-3269.

Library Slashes Fines in Half

Molstead Library has reduced overdue fines from $.50/day to $.25/day for all non-reserve items.

Reserve fines will remain $1.00/day for daily and $1.00/hour for hourly checkout items. Maximum fines will still be $10/item. Grace periods remain one week for books and CDs, and one day for videotapes and DVDs. No fines are charged during grace periods, but fines are calculated from the due date if an item is returned beyond the grace period.

The library charges fines for overdue items in the interest of fairness to all students, faculty, and other library users. A semester is sixteen weeks long. We lend books for four weeks, with an additional four week renewal period. As long as a book is out, no others have access. In order to be fair to others who may need materials during a semester, we impose overdue fines to encourage users to return items in a timely manner. We tried a no fine policy in the past and found that most items were kept out over the entire semester or longer.

Since our collection has more than doubled, we feel a reduction in fines is warranted and will not adversely impact our users’ access to materials.
