COEUR D ALENE-- Denise Clark, the inimitable North Idaho College Librarian of long standing, has apparently escaped the grounds of North Idaho College late this afternoon. Officials close to the situation have reported the discovery of her office emptied of the usual stacks of papers, books, planners, and nun-themed brick-a-brack and the absence of Denise Clark herself. Investigators believe Clark was planning to escape for some time.
"Despite our close observation of her activities she just managed to slip past us today." said one source close to the investigation. "We believe she will make her way south at some point. If we're lucky, we can catch her before she hits the border. Beyond that, I just hope she makes the mistake of landing in a country that has an extradition treaty with Kootenai County."
Bonne chance, Denise!

If it wasn’t for Denise, I probably wouldn’t be working here in the library. Thanks to her, I get to work at a job I enjoy – the best job I’ve ever had. Denise first suggested I come to work here, and she later first suggested I go to graduate school. Her support and encouragement were a great help in enabling me to obtain a Masters in Library Science degree, and in giving me the confidence to tackle the wide range of skills and knowledge the job requires.

Besides being irreplaceable, Denise is one of the most conscientious and tireless people I've ever met. Her dedication to excellence at Molstead Library is legendary both in keeping up to date with new books, information and technology to helping instructors and students find exactly what they couldn't articulate needing, but agreeing that what she found for them was exactly what they wanted. If you know what I mean. Her smile, intelligence and wit will be greatly missed by all.

Denise Clark really knows where she wants to go in library services and
works really hard (and with pizzazz) to get there, especially as a team
member and leader. She has a nice combination of "traditional",
no-nonsense values with admirably radical, even joyfully
radical, qualities that always fired me out my easy apathies and helped
me to care again about our often frustrating profession. Not only did
she DELIGHT! in building the remarkable collection that is Molstead
Library's gift to the NIC (and greater Coeur d'Alene) community, but
she delivered the "library goods" in her relationships with students,
faculty, administrators and the greater community. She gave and gives
library service a Good Name, for sure. And she deserves, and probably
welcomes, a rich new life in retirement. I wish her every good
adventure in the years to come and am grateful to have been a
colleague.

The library's authentication server will be down from 8pm Wednesday, December 2nd through 7am Thursday, December 3rd for routine maintenance.
Database access will still be available in the library. Your alternative for accessing article databases from off campus is the LiLI Databases site linked to on the library web site.
A planned network upgrade in the Molstead building will shut down Internet connectivity for the day on Sunday, Nov. 15th in the library and the computer lab including wireless access.
The library will remain open and staff will be available to assist you with finding books without the online catalog. However, no access to online databases or the Internet from within the library will be possible. Library online resources (databases, etc.) will still be available from off campus.
The University of Texas Libraries has discontinued hosting and support of its TILT information literacy tutorial. For more details, click here.
An alternative hosting solution is being sought at this time. Until then, take a look at the alternatives suggested by UT Libraries.

The library online catalog will not be available on Tuesday, Wednesday, and possibly most of Thursday (December 16th, 17th, and 18th) of this week as we upgrade our system software.
We will still be able to check books in and out to patrons. As far as searching for books and other items in the catalog you can try using OCLC WorldCat (link is on the library web site) and checking the box next to "Limit to items in my library" under "Advanced Search." Or, you can simply contact a librarian for assistance in searching for books.
I am told that the system is supposed to be back to normal sometime Thursday. So bear with us and I think we will all be OK.
This new product from EBSCO is now available and compliments our growing collection of resources on environmental issues nicely. To see all of our Life Sciences & Environment related databases go here http://www.nic.edu/library/databases/db_lifesci.htm.
GreenFILE description from EBSCO:
GreenFILE indexes scholarly and
general interest titles, as well as government documents and reports. This resource
offers a unique perspective on the positive and negative ways humans affect the
environment. Drawing on the connection between the environment and disciplines
such as agriculture, education, law, health and technology, GreenFILE
serves as an informative resource for anyone concerned about the issues facing
our planet. The database contains nearly 300,000 records, full text for
selected titles and searchable cited references for more than 200 titles as

Starting December 5th, 2008 the library will close at 2:30 PM on Fridays and will not be open on Saturdays.
Until now, the library has closed at 4:00 PM on Fridays and was open from 12:00 to 4:00 PM on Saturdays. Due to very low traffic (and to save a bit of money) we have decided to close down with the rest of the campus on Fridays at 2:30 PM and eliminate the Saturday hours altogether.
The library will remain open on Sundays from 1:00 to 8:00 PM for students who need weekend access.
